Ready or Not 2: A Disastrous Wedding Night Turns Even Worse
When we last saw Grace at the end of 2019's 'Ready or Not,' she was sitting on a stone step, her wedding dress torn and stained with blood, as a mansion burned behind her. It was a moment filled with dark humor as she dryly explained to the police, 'In-laws.'
Fast forward seven years, and we have 'Ready or Not 2: Here I Come,' picking up immediately after the first film's chaotic conclusion. However, the tone of this sequel is markedly darker. Grace collapses into unconsciousness, and her nightmare begins anew.
This sequel, directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, struggles to maintain the original's playful energy amidst the chaos. While the first film balanced humor with horror, this installment feels heavier, primarily due to the introduction of new characters, including the brooding Dr. Jack Abbott, played by Shawn Hatosy.
In the first film, Grace survived a deadly game forced upon her by her in-laws, the Le Domas family. This time, she wakes up in a hospital bed, now suspected of arson and murder, with her estranged sister Faith (played by Kathryn Newton) appearing as her emergency contact.
But soon, the stakes escalate as Grace finds herself being hunted again, not by the Le Domas family, but by four other families vying for power. The action shifts to a lavish Newport estate where the hunt resumes.
As the film progresses, Grace proves her resilience once more. Actress Samara Weaving delivers a standout performance, showcasing her ability to blend fear with humor. The dynamic between Grace and Faith evolves, leading to moments of reconciliation amid the chaos.
Despite the film's longer runtime of 148 minutes, some scenes feel stretched, making the audience question when relief will come. Although the film features a high volume of gore, especially with the character Titus, portrayed by Hatosy, the overall execution lacks the charm of its predecessor.
'Ready or Not 2: Here I Come' is rated R for strong bloody violence, pervasive language, and brief drug use. It ultimately offers thrills but may disappoint fans hoping for the same light-hearted horror experience of the original.
Rating: 2 out of 4 stars.
