Kaouther Ben Hania Questions CBFC’s Block on The Voice of Hind Rajab: A Fragile India-Israel Relationship?
Tunisian director Kaouther Ben Hania has expressed her dismay over the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) blocking the release of her Oscar-nominated docudrama, The Voice of Hind Rajab. The film, which highlights the tragic story of a Palestinian girl killed during the Gaza conflict, has reportedly faced censorship due to concerns regarding India-Israel relations.
In an Instagram post, Ben Hania reflected on her fondness for India, noting, "I grew up loving India. Bollywood was part of my childhood. At some point, I even imagined I had Indian roots just to feel special. Is the honeymoon between the ‘world’s largest democracy’ and the ‘only democracy in the Middle East’ so fragile that a film could break it? I would love to hear your opinions."
The film was initially set to release in India on March 6. However, its distributor, Manoj Nandwana, revealed that the CBFC denied certification, citing potential repercussions on India's relationship with Israel. He stated that a board member indicated that releasing the film could jeopardize diplomatic ties between the two nations.
After screenings in various countries, including the US and UK, the film's sensitive nature was highlighted by the board, leading to its stalled release in India.
The decision has ignited discussions across social media, with users voicing their concerns. One user remarked on the difficulties in organizing screenings in Bangalore, while others condemned the blockade, emphasizing solidarity with Palestine.
The Voice of Hind Rajab was nominated for Best International Feature Film at the 98th Academy Awards, spotlighting the ongoing struggles faced by Palestinians.
