5 Everyday Habits That Heighten Lung Cancer Risk: Insights from a Bengaluru Oncologist
Lung cancer is a leading cause of cancer-related deaths globally, affecting both men and women. Early detection is crucial, as advanced stages limit treatment options. Alongside regular screenings, adopting healthy lifestyle habits can significantly reduce risk factors.
Dr. Vijay Agarwal, a medical oncologist at Apollo Hospitals in Bengaluru, emphasizes that many unnoticed daily habits can cumulatively elevate the risk of lung cancer over time.
Here are five habits that increase lung cancer risk:
1. Smoking Even a Few Cigarettes a Day
Tobacco smoke contains numerous cancer-causing chemicals, such as benzene and formaldehyde. Even light or occasional smoking can repeatedly damage lung cells, heightening cancer risk over time.
2. Regular Exposure to Second-Hand Smoke
Non-smokers exposed to secondhand smoke inhale many of the same toxic substances as smokers. This exposure can occur in homes, cars, and shared living spaces.
3. Cooking in Poorly Ventilated Kitchens
Using high-temperature cooking methods or fuels like wood and coal can release fine particles that irritate the lungs. This is particularly concerning for those using traditional stoves without proper ventilation.
4. Breathing Polluted Air Daily
Air pollution, especially fine particulate matter (PM2.5), can penetrate deeply into the lungs, causing inflammation and cellular damage. This exposure is linked to an increased risk of lung cancer, even for non-smokers.
5. Ongoing Exposure to Harmful Substances at Work
Occupations in construction, mining, welding, and manufacturing often involve exposure to dust and harmful chemicals. Prolonged exposure to asbestos is also a significant risk factor.
To mitigate these risks, Dr. Agarwal advises cutting down on smoking, stating that there is no safe level of smoking. Improving kitchen ventilation and opting for cleaner cooking fuels can also help. For those in high-risk work environments, wearing protective masks is recommended.
