Aparna Sen Critiques the Decline of the Bengali Film Industry

Acclaimed filmmaker Aparna Sen has expressed her concerns regarding the current state of the Bengali film industry, describing it as 'moribund.' In a candid interview, she revealed her disinterest in creating more films due to a lack of audience engagement.

At 80 years old, Sen shared her thoughts on the impact of television on cinema, stating, 'Everyone is watching TV, watching serials. That is why I am not interested in making films anymore. Who will watch? What is the point?' She lamented the control over the industry, suggesting that while television provides employment, it diminishes the audience's taste for quality films.

Regarding her latest project, 'The Rapist,' she admitted uncertainty about its theatrical release. Sen noted that the current trend in OTT platforms favors light-hearted content over serious narratives, stating, 'I might have things to say, but who will listen?' This highlights her frustration with the evolving entertainment landscape.

Having begun her career as an actor and transitioning to directing, Sen is celebrated for her impactful films like '36 Chowringhee Lane' and 'Mr and Mrs Iyer.' As she reflects on her legacy, she questions the future of serious storytelling in Indian cinema.
