According to historical accounts, it is believed that the Mughal emperor Babur’s general, Mir Baqi, constructed the Babri Masjid on the disputed site in Ayodhya in 1528. Hindus believe that the land in Ayodhya is the birthplace of Lord Ram, a revered deity in Hinduism. They claim that a temple dedicated to Lord Ram stood at the site, which was destroyed by the Mughal emperor Babur to build the Babri Masjid in the 16th century. The dispute over the site intensified in the 19th and 20th centuries. Legal battles ensued between Hindu and Muslim groups claiming ownership of the land. On December 6, 1992, a large gathering of Hindu activists and political groups demolished the Babri Masjid, claiming it stood on the birthplace of Lord Ram. The case went through various legal stages, and the ownership and control of the site remained a highly contentious issue for decades.

The long legal battle culminated in a historic verdict by the Indian Supreme Court in November 2019. The court ruled in favor of the construction of Shri Ram Mandir (temple) at the disputed site, citing the significance of Lord Ram’s birthplace for Hindus. It also ordered the allocation of an alternate piece of land to the Muslim community for the construction of a mosque.

Following the Supreme Court verdict, the construction of the Ram Mandir commenced after a groundbreaking ceremony (Bhoomi Pujan) held on August 5, 2020. The temple’s construction is managed by the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra trust.

The inauguration date for the  Ram Mandir is set for January 22, 2024, with Prime Minister Modi scheduled to inaugurate this revered temple, holding immense spiritual significance in India.

• Following the Supreme Court judgment, the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) commenced collecting donations or “Chanda” for the construction of the Ram Mandir. Citizens across the country contributed donations ranging from Rs 10 to lakhs towards the construction of the temple.
• The temple’s architectural design is based on ancient Vastu Shastra principles and traditional Hindu temple architecture. It aims to be a grand and magnificent structure reflecting Lord Ram’s life and teachings.
• This sacred temple is meticulously crafted in adherence to Hindu architectural principles, ensuring its authenticity and reverence.
