Understanding Facet Joint Syndrome: The Hidden Cause of Chronic Back and Neck Pain

Chronic back and neck pain are prevalent complaints today, often dismissed with quick fixes like heat packs or topical balms. However, persistent pain can indicate an underlying issue, such as Facet Joint Syndrome, which requires proper medical attention.

Dr. Neeraj Gupta, a senior consultant spine surgeon at ISIC Multispecialty Hospital in New Delhi, identifies Facet Joint Syndrome as a common cause of chronic back and neck pain. This condition is frequently overlooked because individuals often attribute their discomfort to muscle strain or poor posture.

Facet joints are small stability joints located between the vertebrae of the spine. They are elastic, aiding in the alignment and smooth movement of the spine. Unfortunately, these joints can degenerate due to age, inflammation, injury, or repeated stress, leading to Facet Joint Syndrome.

The condition can worsen with specific movements, such as bending backwards or twisting, and can impact mobility, making everyday activities more challenging.

Signs and Symptoms

To better understand Facet Joint Syndrome, consider the following signs shared by Dr. Gupta:

  • Localized pain in the neck, mid-back, or lower back
  • Pain exacerbated by extension (leaning back) or rotation
  • Stiffness and reduced flexibility in the spine
  • Muscle spasms around the affected area
  • Pain radiating into the shoulders, buttocks, or thighs (without nerve compression)
  • Discomfort after prolonged standing or sitting

Diagnosing this condition can be challenging, as facet joint pain often mimics other spinal issues. Recognizing the specific signs and symptoms is crucial to understanding whether your neck pain is a simple posture problem or something more serious.
