Urgent Rescue Efforts for Escaped Toucan in Las Vegas

In Las Vegas, a toucan named Sam has become the focus of a race against time for local rescue groups. After escaping his owner's cage last November, Sam has been spotted flying around the North Las Vegas area, captivating bird enthusiasts and locals alike.

Katherine Eddington, a local resident, was driving when she spotted what she initially thought was a large black bird carrying a banana. Upon closer inspection, she recognized it as a toucan and promptly contacted animal rescue.

Sam has been living in the wild for several months, surviving on fruits from local trees. However, as the seasons changed, his food sources dwindled, forcing him to eat potentially harmful citrus fruits.

Skye Marsh, president of SouthWest Exotic Avian Rescue, expressed concern for Sam’s wellbeing. The harsh Las Vegas climate poses significant challenges for a toucan. With signs of distress evident, including sunken eyes and skin discoloration, immediate action is needed.

The rescue team has been tirelessly searching for Sam but has faced difficulties in capturing him, as he often perches high in palm trees. Experts warn that the longer he remains in the wild, the more precarious his situation becomes.

Marsh urges the community to refrain from approaching or trying to catch Sam themselves, as this could further stress the bird. The rescue group has set up a cage with food nearby, hoping to entice him for a safe capture.

Once captured, Sam will receive urgent veterinary care to ensure he recovers from the dangers of living in the wild and the inappropriate diet he has been forced to adopt.

As the rescue effort continues, the community remains hopeful for Sam's safe return.
