By Air:

  • From Dehradun Airport to Ponta Sahib:You can hire a taxi or take a shared cab from the airport. It’s about a 2-3 hour drive, depending on traffic conditions.

By Train:

  • Nearest Railway Station: The nearest major railway station is the Dehradun Railway Station, which is approximately 68 kilometers away from Ponta Sahib.
  • From Dehradun Railway Station to Ponta Sahib: You can hire a taxi or take a shared cab from the railway station. The journey will take about 2-3 hours.

By Road:

  • From Delhi to Ponta Sahib: Ponta Sahib is about 300 kilometers away from Delhi, and the journey takes around 7-8 hours by road, depending on traffic conditions.
  • From Chandigarh to Ponta Sahib: Chandigarh is approximately 160 kilometers away from Ponta Sahib, and the drive usually takes about 4-5 hours.

 

History:

Paonta Sahib has a rich historical background. It is believed that Guru Gobind Singh Ji stayed in this town for about four years during the late 17th century. It was during his stay here that he wrote many religious texts and composed hymns. The town gets its name from the “Paonta” or “adze” (a type of tool) that Guru Gobind Singh Ji used while camping in the area.

  • Gurudwara Paonta Sahib: The town is famous for the Gurudwara Paonta Sahib, which was established by Guru Gobind Singh Ji in 1685 during his stay here. It is one of the important pilgrimage sites for Sikhs and is located on the banks of the Yamuna River.
